The story behind the name

Why “Torch Table Cafe”?

I’m Bill. I worked at a steel mill in the Midwest as a torch table operator for 35 years. Think about that for a second. Thirty-five years of always lugging in a lunch box, usually filled with leftovers, sometimes a microwave meal, or the special treat of when I could talk my darling wife into dropping off some fast food.

One day it hit me: why not keep a few simple appliances in my locker and cook fresh hot meals for me and some of my coworkers? That’s mainly what you’ll find here — quick, simple recipes. Things you can cook in a crock pot, deep fryer, or electric skillet, or premade and brought in from home.

From a simple suggestion from my old friend Jeff in the lab to make sharing the recipes easier, the Torch Table Cafe was born way back in 2008. I’m retired now and the steel mill life is behind me, but the spirit and memories of the Torch Table Cafe live on.
